iPods, other small storage devices pose security risk

About the size of a disposable lighter, USB flash drives are fast replacing floppy and zip drives for the physical exchange of files. Yet, without any administrator control over USB ports, anyone with access to a local PC can use these portable, plug-and-play drives to upload or download whatever they want from your network. It’s startling then that, in a recent IT security survey, 83% of respondents indicated that they have not taken any steps to control local USB device use. What about you?

Norwich & Peterborough Building Society protects against USB risks with DeviceLock®

N&P has seen the benefits of using DeviceLock®. One example is in the number of calls to the helpdesk from employees requesting the resolving of issues with plug-ins via USB ports. As Mr. Matthewman comments, "users are now unable to access devices without our consent. SmartLine Inc has once again expanded the DeviceLock® feature set so now even users with local administrator privileges can't disable DeviceLock® Service or remove it from their computers, if they are not in this list of DeviceLock® administrators. A new function, Temporary White List, makes granting users temporary access to USB devices possible when there is no network connection (Administrators provide users with the special access codes over the phone that temporarily unlock access to requested devices).
